NASSP Announces 2009 MetLife/NASSP National Principal of the Year Finalists
Pat Schmidt, Hopkins North Jr High School

A high-achieving school is guided by a principal who leads with the staff, and that's the case at Hopkins North Junior High School, where Principal Pat Schmidt has created a culture of teamwork and collaboration.

Three formal staff leadership groups help move the strategic plan of the 900-student school "from paper to practice." Grade-level team leaders, the content-specific department chairs, and members of the professional development council have a voice in every aspect of Hopkins North's programs. Their input has contributed to the development of such initiatives as the advisor-advisee program, redesigned parent conferences, re-allocation of staff during budget cuts, and a commitment to a schoolwide Pre-AP philosophy.

Data is a key element in the school's decision-making process. An annual retreat gives staff time to examine student data and work together to set clearly defined academic goals. The retreat has promoted the integration of research-based instructional strategies into daily instruction and encouraged staff members to share instructional knowledge and strategies, making Hopkins North a true professional learning community.

Personalization and relationship building are at the forefront of life at Hopkins North. For example, every licensed staff person is assigned to a small group of students with whom they meet for 15 minutes each day in Homebase. All three grade levels deliver a slightly different Homebase (advisory) experience, but all emphasize sustained silent reading, anti-bullying, and service learning.

The demographics of the school community have changed during Schmidt's eight years at the helm at Hopkins North, and she has worked diligently with the staff to close the achievement gap. After all, Schmidt believes that every student is our student to nurture and support.

The new vision for Minnesota's high schools should be to prepare every student to earn a credential or a degree at a postsecondary educational institution — whether it is a technical school, two-year college, or four-year college or university. Click the logo above to get a copy of this document.

2009 National Principal of the Year Finalists

The final judging of our 2009 National Principal of the Year Finalists took place on Monday, August 11th. The group enjoyed some sightseeing over the weekend prior to their interviews on Monday. Each finalist spoke with Nancy Murray of MetLife and a handful of NASSP Staff during the PR interviews. For the first time NASSP recorded the interviews which are now available as podcasts on our website. We encourage you to listen in – they’re great! Each finalist then had an hour-long interview with the selection committee which included a 10-minute prepared presentation.
