New administrators are faced with the problem of adjusting to a new position and responsibilities. Balancing student needs with those of parents, community members and staff make the job more complex. Part of the stress that new administrators face is not knowing what educational support is available and how to access that support. This two-day workshop brings together information, professionals and seasoned educational leaders to assist new members. The adults in your school form their own unique and distinct culture, one that needs as much attention and tending as your student culture. This workshop explores strategies to effectively manage the workplace culture in order to reach high student achievement.
1. Creating High Performing Adult Cultures
Unless the adults in your school are effectively working with one another and for you, few of your student goals are likely to be met. Or at least not without significant challenge. This strand shares current research and practices in creating a workplace in your school that brings out the best in you and your people.
2. Creating Effective Workplaces to Withstand Change
In times of change and reform, the culture of the adults in the workplace is tested mightily. This strand explores the specific strategies and practices necessary to create organizational cultures that can navigate change effectively

Improving Educator Morale and Job Satisfaction
January 25, 2012
Presenter: Nate Eklund
Marriott City Center Hotel — Minneapolis
Cost: $150 (member), $195 (non-member)
Download a registration form
This workshop is not about creating “happy teachers and administrators.” But it is about creating an organization in which the adults thrive and are sustained effectively. If the adults don’t want to show up, the students won’t want to either.
1. Addressing Teacher and Staff Morale
Tending to the professional climate of a school is often marginalized in the face of the tremendous pressures facing educators. But this marginalization can come at a great cost. The effectiveness, recruitment, and retention of quality staff is greatly jeopardized when the workplace culture isn’t satisfying. Increasing your own engagement with improving workplace culture actually reduces the hemorrhaging of energy and resources that occurs already. This isn’t about spending more time on adults concerns. This is about spending smarter time on adult concerns.
2. Addressing YOUR Morale and Job Satisfaction
Being a leader isn’t easy. It’s really hard in fact. And your job takes its toll. At the end of the day, your staff and students want YOU to love your job. But they probably won’t ask you to tend to your needs in order to ensure that you do. That’s up to you. This strand explores how you and those around you work toward maintaining and sustaining your own professional energy and passion.
